각본집을 처음 읽어본다. 영화에서 놓친 것이 무엇일까 궁금해서 읽었는데, 사실 멋있는 대사 몇 개 빼고는 크게 놓친 건 없는 듯 싶다. 이 각본집은 영화와 정확히 일치하지는 않아 보인다. 

영화는 세 가지 축을 중심으로 돌아간다. 오펜하이머가 겪는 보안청문회, 그의 회상, 그리고 스트로스의 상원 인준청문회이다. 각본집을 읽으면서 너무 상황을 왔다갔다 한다는 생각을 했다. 영화를 보지 않았으면 따라가기 힘들었을 수도 있을 것 같다. 

오펜하이머와 그로브스 장군 사이의 대화에서 이 둘의 이름을 바꿔서 잘못 인쇄한 부분이 있다(p. 93). 

영화의 마지막 장면 부분: 

EXT. LAKESIDE, INSTITUTE FOR ADVANCED STUDY, PRINCETON -- DAY

Einstein turns to leave. Up the hill, Strauss approaches...

OPPENHEIMER

      Albert? When I came to you with those calculations?

Einstein pauses. I watch raindrops make circles on the surface of the pond...

OPPENHEIMER

      We were worried that we'd start a chain reaction that would destroy the entire world...

EINSTEIN

      I remember it well. What of it?

OPPENHEIMER

      I believe we did.

Einstein PALES. TURNS, passing Strauss without a word... The sound of FEET STAMPING...

Close in on: my staring eyes as I visualize THE EXPANDING NUCLEAR ARSENALS OF THE WORLD... THE FEET, FASTER AND FASTER --

물리학자인 제레미 번스타인의 오펜하이머 평전이다. 비교적 짧기 때문에(238 페이지) 최근 영화화된 카이 버드의 <American Prometheus>보다 빨리 읽을 수 있다. 오펜하이머의 삶을 시간적 순서로 따라간다. 저자가 직접 겪은 일화와 물리학적 내용의 정확한 요약이 이 책의 장점이다. 많은 영광에도 불구하고 오펜하이머의 삶은 비극적이었다. 그의 성격과 당시의 상황이 이를 야기했다. 

번스타인은 아인슈타인의 전기도 썼다. 

플라톤주의, 모형을 실재로 착각함, 데카르트의 이원론 등에 대해 비판하며 의식이 환상이 아니라 실재함을 주장한다. 거의 대부분이 현대 물리학에서 제시하는 세계관에 반대되는 내용이다. 앞으로도 많이 논의될 반역적 내용임에 의심의 여지가 없다. 연관되어 언급되는 책들을 찾아서 읽어봐야겠다는 생각이 든다. 내게는 스몰린의 책 <Time Reborn> 이후에 가장 혁명적인 책이다. 

In order for free will in the ordinary sense to exist, one must imagine an entity--we can call it a soul--that acts outside the laws of nature and is not governed by them. Defined this way, free will is immediately linked to Cartesian dualism. The soul, with its free will, acts outside the laws of nature in much the same way that God intervenes with divine miracles. (p. 163)

  The concept of free will is based on a worldview where the boundary between models and the world itself is not clear. We draw conclusions about the world based on models that will never be complete. Even when we acknowledge our limited knowledge, we fall into language and ways of thinking that are inadequate to the task. (p. 165)

다니엘손은 보통 논의되는 자유의지의 개념에 물질/영혼 이원론의 혐의가 짙음을 지적한다. 

OPPENHEIMER

      It swallows everything. Even light.

CHEVALIER

      Good God. Can that really happen?

OPPENHEIMER

      The math says it can. If we can get published, maybe one day an astronomer finds one. But all I have is theory.
